Certainly some of the best song writing America has known has come from the Bluegrass tradition. Even Elvis Presley made it a point to cover the compositions of Bluegrass father Bill Monroe. Few Bluegrass groups though, have made it their primary focus to create and perform original compositions. One exception to this the Charlotte based group Candlewyck. The group was formed around the duo of guitarist Ty Bennett and mandolinist Chris Emerson. Their extraordinary song writing and playing attracted a variety of talent to their fist recording on Votive records including Lonesome River Band alumni Don Rigsby, John Cowan (New Grass Revival), Joe Craven (David Grisman Quintet) and Steve Dilling of IIIrd Time Out. A single off their first recording Fireman was awarded Best Bluegrass Song at the 2002 Independent Music Awards.
The group now includes Jon Cornatzer on banjo and guitar and the vocalist Rachel Moody. Jon Cornatzer is impressively combines banjo parts performed on the CD (by Terry Baucom, Jens Kruger, Tony Furtado, etc.) with his own creative ideas. Likewise, Rachel Moody is extremely versatile going from high-gear newgrass tunes to lush ballads with ease and sincerity.
